For Prospective Members

Important Note:  Due to space limitations, CKCB will not be able to accept new members at this time. We will consider exceptions to this policy for tuba players or in the case of a player with truly exceptional skills.

We sincerely regret the necessity to take this action. We want everyone who wants to play in a community band to have that opportunity. Fortunately, there are several other fine ensembles within a short drive of Lexington:

We will update this page when we are again able to consider new memberships, so please check back.

The information below describes our typical procedure for band membership.

For the past 40 years, the CKCB has been considered the finest adult band in the Commonwealth and one of the foremost ensembles of its nature in the southeastern United States.

This recognition has been earned because of our commitment to excellence in performance and our devotion to the importance of the adult music-maker.

The members  of the CKCB represent great breadth and variety. Teachers, preachers, lawyers, doctors, engineers, business people, homemakers, civil servants and working musicians come together weekly, united by a common interest: the love of making music.

For prospective new members

  • The CKCB is an adult band. Members must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Other than percussion, we are not able to provide instruments for members,
  • Members are expected to attend all weekly rehearsals, dress rehearsals and concerts for a given season. Schedules are widely distributed approximately well in advance. However, it is understood that conflicts of a professional or personal nature may arise and these will be handled on an individual basis.

Procedure

Each year, our first three rehearsals of the season (in September) are “open” rehearsals, to which all interested wind or percussion players are invited.  If you decide that you wish to pursue membership, you will have the opportunity to audition for a place in the CKCB.  See the Audition Information page for details about the audition process.

Please contact Ben Hawkins (bhawkins@transy.edu) and Jill Brown, (borntoplayhorn@hotmail.com) if you plan to come to rehearsals. This will allow us to have music waiting for you.

Rehearsals are held in Room 203 (the band room) of the Mitchell Fine Arts Center at Transylvania University, 7:30 – 9:30 each Monday evening. MFA is located next to the parking lot at Fourth and Upper Streets in Lexington.

We recommend that any prospective member take a few moments to peruse several aspects of our website to learn more about our schedule, past performances and repertoire. (See the CKCB Playlist page to see our historic playlist.)  Please contact us if you have questions.

Thank you. We hope to see you at an open rehearsal!
